ABOUT ME

I am a marine scientist with a PhD in Marine Science and Technology, specializing in chemical oceanography, environmental chemistry, marine microbiology, and ecotoxicology. Throughout my academic journey, I focused on conducting environmental risk assessments by characterizing marine systems through (micro)biological and chemical analysis. These efforts were aimed at supporting coastal management and monitoring initiatives, particularly in relation to pollution and ocean acidification.
During my time in academia, I had the privilege of participating in a variety of international research projects. These included a marine sediment quality study in the Atacama Desert (Chile), the characterization of organic matter in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and assessing the impact of land-based activities—such as seawater desalination and wastewater discharge—on coastal environments in Durban (South Africa), among others. It was an incredible experience that allowed me to collaborate with brilliant scientists, visit numerous countries, and work in different research institutions.
However, as time passed, and my personal circumstances evolved—particularly after starting a family—I began to reflect on my career path. The instability of academic positions made me reconsider my future. It was difficult to come to terms with the fact that academia was no longer the right fit for me, or for my family. But stepping away from that world allowed me to realize that there are many ways to engage with science beyond academia. Industry offers one of those opportunities. So, my advice: never underestimate your skills or your ability to adapt!
Today, I work in the industry sector (seaweed industry) as a Production and R&D Manager. I am responsible for ensuring that the seedling production is completed on time and in accordance with the required standards, and in charge of the R&D department.
